Installing BTT-Writer on Mac

Installing BTT-Writer on a Mac is simple, with a few areas of difficulty.

Program Installation

Download the application from the Internet, and copy it to a place on your computer. (Here, it is on the Desktop. You can also put it in the Applications folder.

Problem Starting the Program

The first time you try to run BTT-Writer, you may get this message instead.

Avoiding the Problem

The first time you start BTT-Writer (for each version) you must right-click on the application icon and choose Open. This is necessary because it has not been signed by a developer known to Apple.

Agree to Open the Application

If you open it as we have said, a dialog will open asking if you want to open it. Click on Open.

Git

If you have not already installed the Command Line Tools from Apple (See MAST Setup (Desktop) for more information) you will get this error.

Blank Window

Then, you will see this blank window. The action needed is behind this window.

Git install window

When a program tries to use git, if it is not installed the OS will try to help you to install it. If you have a good, high speed Internet connection, you can click on Install to download and install the software. You can also install Xcode by clicking on the Get Xcode button, but this is not necessary unless you want to make other programs for Mac. It is a much larger download.

If you don’t see this window, open the Terminal (application in Utilities folder). Then, type xcode-select –install

In either case, click on Install.

License Agreement

You will be asked to agree to the License Agreement for the Command Line Tools.

Downloading the Command Line Tools

The download of the Command Linen Tools can take a very long time if you don’t have a good high speed Internet connection. Also, if you are billed by megabyte, it can be expensive to download in this way.

Installation complete

When the installation of git is complete, you can click on Done.

Running BTT-Writer

Once both git (Command Line Tools) and BTT-Writer have been installed on the computer, and when BTT-Writer has been opened once using the right-click method above, it will open to this screen. Additional documentation about how to use BTT-Writer is available at https://btt-writer.readthedocs.io/
